What to pack
3 min readUpdated June 11, 2026
Astana in August is a city of two temperatures: pleasantly warm afternoons and surprisingly crisp nights — the steppe cools fast once the sun drops, and the wind likes to remind you where you are. Pack for both and you'll be comfortable all week.
The weather, honestly
- Days: typically around 25–30 °C — t-shirt weather, sunny, dry.
- Evenings and nights: often down to 12–15 °C — you will want a layer.
- Wind: Astana is famously breezy; a light windproof jacket earns its place.
- These are seasonal averages — check the forecast in the week before you fly.
The checklist
Documents & money
- Passport (and visa or support letter, if you need one — see the Kazakhstan page)
- Printed accommodation and registration confirmations
- Travel insurance details (bring a printed copy too)
- A bank card — cards are widely accepted in Astana — plus a little cash in tenge (₸) for markets and small shops
Clothes
- Light clothes for warm days, plus a warm layer (hoodie or light jacket) for evenings
- A windproof or light rain jacket
- Formal wear — plenaries and the ceremonies have a dress code; pack at least one formal outfit
- National costume or NMO merch for Cultural Night and the NFDP — the most photographed evenings of the GA
- Comfortable shoes: campus days mean more walking than you think
Electronics
- Power adapter: Kazakhstan uses type C/F plugs (European), 220 V / 50 Hz — UK, US, and many Asian plugs need an adapter
- Power bank — long plenary days are long
- Phone charger, and a cable long enough for dorm-bed reality
Health & comfort
- Any personal medication (in original packaging, with the prescription if it's prescription-only)
- Sunscreen and sunglasses — the steppe sun is strong
- Reusable water bottle
- Earplugs and a sleep mask — shared rooms, social program until late
Leave room
The NFDP means everyone brings food and drinks from home — and the merch table, the bazaars, and your post-GA tour all conspire against an already-full suitcase. Pack light on the way in.
